(Sulawesi, Indonesia) PWJ/ACT needs your help to support families in distress from tsunami and earthquake

According to the World Food Programme (WFP) report on October 12, 2018, Sulawesi earthquake and tsunami disaster have caused over 2,000 deaths, 2,500 severely insured and over 87,000 people have been displaced in 112 camp sites.

PWJ and our local partner ACT (Aksi Cepat Tanggap) first visited Palu City in Donggala district for a joint needs assessment, on October 1 2018, at that time, the area had very limited electricity and gasoline was scarce, the roads were covered with debris.  Frequent aftershocks made people more vulnerable and they were suffering from loss of home, family members, livelihood from the disaster.

 Though some of the infrastructure has been restored and the city has shown a sign of small relief and recovery, it was clear that communities were having difficulties securing enough water and food to support entire families.  Our response team plans to distribute basic food items such as rice, oil, sugar, canned fish, tea to tsunami and earthquake affected households in Palu city.

The recovery has just begun but it will take a long time for communities in Sulawesi to return to what they used to be.
