[Moldova]Peace Winds has been repairing Moldovan schools which accept many Ukrainian children
About 120,000 Ukrainian people still live in neighboring Moldova due to the continuing Russian invasion into their home country. About 40 % of them are children under the age of 17. Unfortunately, some of the public schools in Moldova are quite old and do not provide preferable studying conditions due to financial restrictions.

Classrooms where children spend most of their time at school needed urgent repairs. Windows made with wooden frames had been used from the time when Moldova was a part of the Soviet Union more than 30 years ago. Some glasses were broken allowing cold wind to blow in. Peace Winds exchanged almost all windows of classrooms to resin-made insulated windows. We also exchanged some ceiling lights, some of which were broken, to new LED lights.

The large windows of the school gym were also made of wood with one glass left broken since last summer when a tree branch was blown into it. Peace Winds replaced all of them with insulated windows.
Now, the gym is brighter.
Peace Winds repaired the roof of the gym because unless we stop the rain, all the repair work inside of the gym would be in vain.

Ms. Angela, the principal of the school, says she was not sure if the repair would actually be done when we first visited the Taras Shevchenko school last year for pre-construction assessment, because she had been disappointed with broken promises for a long time in the past. But now the repair work is complete and she expects more support from other organizations including UNICEF and others for other repair works. She told us that she expects support for the renovation of the gym soon. With all the renovations, the school is expected to welcome more new pupils and students when the school starts in September. Ms. Angela is grateful to the Japanese donors who made this project possible.
