[Afghanistan] Food Crisis Response: Afghan Family’s Efforts to Confront the Food Crisis – On the Occasion of World Food Day on October 16
Afghanistan continues to face a very serious food crisis in 2024 due to a combination of many disasters, economic instability, and other factors. In Kot and Batikot Districts of Nangarhar Province, where Peace Winds is currently working with a local partner organization, priority is given to female-headed households, vulnerable households with disabled or elderly members, and households that are most vulnerable to economic hardship and life-threatening situations. The project provides both cash for food assistance and poultry rearing assistance to the same households.
In September 2024, cash was disbursed to eligible households to purchase food. At the same time, we have started training in poultry rearing techniques to ensure not only emergency assistance but also more sustainable food supply. Representatives from each household are currently participating in this training, learning how to set up chicken coops and poultry rearing know-how. Poultry rearing is one of the livestock raising activities that have been familiar to the common people in Afghanistan for many years, and 70% of the participants are women, as it is one of the livelihood improvement activities that women can easily participate in because it can be done mainly at their own premises.

After receiving training on how to build a chicken coop, the participants immediately set about building one at home. With the help of their families and neighbors, they prepared chicken coops suitable for the site with their own hands. Experts and staff also visited during the construction process and provided advice as needed.

After completing the preliminary training on basic chicken raising, everyone received the chickens purchased from the supplier! Finally, the practice of chicken rearing will begin.
