Taiwan: PWJ SAR Team responds to Typhoon Soudelor disaster relief support
Augusut 8, 2015, PWJ’s Search and Rescue (SAR) team and its SAR dogs Yumenosuke and Hulk, have conducted an extensive search operation in the northwest of Taiwan. Typhoon Soudelor landed in Taiwan in the morning August 8 and its strong winds and rain caused the loss of 6 people and left millions without electricity. The team responded to a request to search for a missing person in northern Taiwan in New Taipei City, and extensive search and rescue operations were conducted.
Although the search and rescue operation was called off, the team mobilized and prepared for operations on August 6, prior to the landing of the super Typhoon Soudelor. Throughout the operation, the team has been coordinating rescue operations with the Asia Pacific Alliance for Disaster Management, PWJ’s partner organization, as well as local police, fire station, and a local NGO Taiwan Root.
This is the third overseas search and rescue deployment for Yumenosuke and Hulk, after responding to a typhoon in the Philippines in 2014, and the recent earthquake rescue operation in Nepal in April 2015. The SAR team will continue its search and rescue operations in Taiwan to support those affected by the typhoon.
