Philippines：Life-saving relief packages handed out to families in Typhoon Haiyan affected areas Dec5

Samar Island, the Philippines (December 5, 2013) —

PEACE WINDS JAPAN (PWJ) Typhoon Haiyan response team has arrived in Samar Island and will launch its second distribution of relief packages in the municipalities of Marabut and Hernani.

During this distribution, PWJ emergency response team, headed by Masaharu Saito, Deputy Chief of Program Unit, in coordination with our local partners, Citizens’ Disaster Response Center (CDRC) and Leyte Center for Development (LCDE), plan to reach out to help 3,460 households.

“It is extremely important for us to make sure that relief items are received by those in dire need,” said Mr. Saito.  “Because our local partners have been so efficient and resourceful, we are able to reach areas with less support from outside.  We are very happy with this collaboration work.  Though the area still needs any help they could receive, our mission for this trip is not only to distribute emergency relief packages but also to begin planning for their long-term recovery.  We know people are eager to get back on their feet again.  I believe it is our job to help them with the first step of recovery.”

CDRC’s Deputy Executive Director, Carlos Padolina added, “despite the tremendous devastation, the people of Samar has shown the strength and the spirit to stand up and regain what they have lost to the storm. CDRC and its Regional Center LCDE, through the generous support of PWJ, are only here to help boost that spirit.”
